The PostNuke project was started in July 0f 2001 and was the first open source project to provide a centralized location for developers to control and manage open source software. The concept of open source software (OSS) is based on the theory that when programmers are free to read, modify, and redistribute the source code for the software, changes adaptations, and improvements happen much faster than with traditional software development. PostNuke was also the first open source project to provide a service called the Network Operations Center or NOC. This allowed sourceforge type free hosting service to third party developers.
